As you know, the Tea Party believes in limited government and low taxation. We recognize the wisdom of Daniel Webster and Chief Justice John Marshall who both proclaimed, “The power to tax is the power to destroy.”
The Tea Party’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge gives candidates for the Mississippi House and Senate the opportunity to publicly and solemnly commit themselves to oppose any and all tax increases. The Pledge states that the signer will "oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes". Those candidates who sign the Pledge distinguish themselves from the many who say they are conservative but vote liberally when in Jackson away from their supporters’ watchful eyes. Note who the Pledge is made to. It is first and foremost to the people in a signer’s district. Above all, a decision to sign the Pledge is a message to each candidate’s constituents.
